About Manuka Honey and the UMF rating system

New Zealand's native manuka bush produces honey renowned for its nutritional value and health-giving properties.

Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) is New Zealand's primary metric for verifying manuka quality and purity. Each batch of native-grown manuka sold under the UMF label undergoes rigorous testing at recognised labs for chemical and DNA indicators.

Manuka honey is graded on several factors, with Methylglyoxal (MGO) content being most important. At 512 mg/kg, honey qualifies for UMF15+, which supports everyday health and wellness. Lower grades still offer benefits, and all manuka grades carry the distinctive manuka flavour.

UMF.org.nz regulates the UMF label and provides detailed information on manuka's antibacterial, antiviral, and antibiotic properties. The New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) regulates the scientific definition of Manuka Honey and ensures it's integrity.

Waireka Honey is an official UMF member.
